State regulators cut WPS's profit margin, so your electric increase will be smaller
The 5AM De Pere team
If you get your electricity from Wisconsin Public Service, your increase is shrinking. The Public Service Commission cut WPS's profit margin from 9.8% to 9.5% on Nov. 5, and WPS had asked for 9.9%. The move is expected to save ratepayers about $45.9 million over two years.
WPS now estimates much smaller electric increases than it requested
| WPS request | Measure | Estimate after ruling |
|---|---|---|
| 9.6% | 2027 increase | 0.3% |
| 4.0% | 2028 increase | 2.9% |

- Typical 2027 bill: up $1 or less per month
- Typical 2028 bill: up $5-$6 per month
- Written order: expected in the next few weeks
- Original ask: about $16 more on the average bill
WPS estimates its electric rates will rise 0.3% in 2027 and 2.9% in 2028, compared with the 9.6% and 4% it requested. Those figures could change. The Citizens Utility Board says the ruling will save customers over $80 million, though it says the PSC should have gone further. Your rate will still go up, because the increases fund new energy infrastructure, buried power lines and tree trimming.
